What is job burnout? Symptoms that you are “burnout”

What is job burnout? Symptoms that you are “burnout” – September is a month known for the return to routine, also a month where a new season begins. Gone are the sunny days of summer, rest, beach and vacation. That is why going back to work and school is usually a little harder for some people.

The World Health Organization (WHO) describes work burnout as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job”.

Differences between work stress and burnout / Symptoms that you are “burnout”

The CDC defines in its web portal work stress as “the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker”

So we understand that being burned is not the same as having stress at work. In jobs that have to do with customer service, or people assistance, these situations tend to be more frequent.

How can I deal with work stress?

The National Library of Medicine Medline Plus, in its article “Overcoming Work Stress,” recommends the following tips:

  • Take a break.
  • Create a description of your position.
  • Set reasonable goals.
  • Manage your use of technology.
  • Set a limit.
  • Get organized.
  • Do things you enjoy.
  • Take advantage of your free time.
  • Talk to an advisor.
  • Learn other ways to manage stress.

On the other hand, burnout represents losses for both: the company and the worker. If it is not addressed correctly and in a timely manner, it generates consequences such as:

  • Resignation.
  • Staff turnover.
  • Delay in the delivery of projects.
  • job dissatisfaction
  • Demotivation.

If you consider that you are going through the latter, it is advisable to discuss it with your superior, so that there is a correct alignment of expectations, and you can carry out your work in the best possible way.
