Colon cancer analysis

Life expectancy has increased in developed countries and it is estimated that 1 in 2 men and almost 1 in 3 women will have cancer throughout their lives. The most common cancers are prostate and colorectal for men and breast cancer as well as colorectal cancer in women.

According to the Spanish Association Against Cancer *, colorectal cancer will affect 1 in 20 men and 1 in 30 women before the age of 74. About 90% of cancers of the colon and rectum could be cured if they were detected early. There are multiple factors that influence the development of cancer among them lifestyle and genetics inherited from parents.

  1. What are these tests?

    They are tests that study the genetic material (DNA) present in oral cells, which detect mutations in genes that are susceptible to different types of hereditary cancer.

    The colorectal cancer test is aimed to detect mutations in known genes that are predisposed to this type of cancer. Alterations in these genes may produce other related cancers that appear in the board above but are not fully covered. To know the genetic predisposition to other types of cancer is advisable to make a specific test if it exists or, otherwise, choose to make the hereditary cancer test.

  2. Who are they targeting?

    To people with several relatives affected by cancer and suspected hereditary cancer.

    To people who want to know their genetic susceptibility to develop cancer in relation to the general population.

  3. What can they contribute to the patient's daily life?

    When a person has hereditary susceptibility to cancer, the specialist will establish periodic controls to follow up more closely for their early detection and to be able to treat it at the earliest stage.

    The study can determine if a person has an increased likelihood of cancer or has the same as the general population. It is very important to stand out that carriers of a mutation in these genes have a greater predisposition to get cancer, but it does not mean that they will suffer it for sure. Otherwise, a negative result does not imply that sporadic (non-hereditary) cancer cannot appear due to bad habits of life. For this reason, preventive measures and detection programs established for the general population must be followed.

  4. How is the sample taken?

    The patient receives at home by courier a sample collection kit with very easy to follow instructions and an informed consent that must be signed. The sampling is very simple, quick and painless. You must only maintain the precautions detailed in the kit. Once made and given notice, a courier will come at patient’s home to pick it up and take it directly to the laboratory for analysis.
